Whoooooooooo's That?

Looking out the back window the other evening I saw this sitting near the power pole.

Can you make him out in this blurry shot?

I've never seen one without the cloak of darkness.

He was trying to keep up with all the birds flying around and yelling at him - as well as watching me creep closer and closer.

Lots of smaller birds were excitedly chattering, which is what drew my attention to the area first.  This owl must have been too close to their nests or their little ones.

When an owl looks at you, you know you've been looked at!

I managed to edge closer and closer.  My camera does not zoom in very far so I ended up standing with the sprinkler water hitting my back while I shot a short video of this feathered beauty.

Not the best quality video, but it gives you a good look at his head-swiveling talents and to hear the other birds.  Please forgive the narrator's shrill vocalizations...

Ann~ so cool.
He is quite big. We had a pair of owls-- I want to say Spotted Horned owl...??? anyway, they were babies, they stayed for one season and I haven't seen them back.
Actually, when they were here...our field had a large infestation of field mice and rats that year.
Not now! both the vermin and the Owls are gone. :D
so the owl could be watching the pets in the neighborhood. Beware!

The owl might be looking for prey. Usual supply of water might be gone ! Or it was a good time to bother The Boston Lady.Oh Well !

Ann,
This was interesting!
The owl is gorgeous, yes maybe he is looking for prey.
It would be a good idea to watch over Miss Bumby, and Darcy when they are out.
I also watched the video of your house tour. I like the open plan of the house, and how you've created comfortable areas. The painted chair works great in the living room.
It sounds like lots of happy times were had over the years in this house. :)

Right, watch the cats. Our owls come out at dusk. I have never caught them on camera and really have not tried. Getting the hummers almost makes me want to drink.

Fascinating - my daughter & I were sitting on the deck one night about a month ago and saw one fly across the yard and land on the neighbor's roof. Unfortunately it was too dark to see any details at that distance and I wanted so badly to see him swivel his head. Now I got to see it from your video! Thanks for sharing. Hugs ~ Mary

He's a beautiful creature and you were lucky to get some nice pics of him :-)
My sister collects owl ornaments etc. and once had a tawny frog-mouth in her yard for a few days. They are not owls but are very similar.
She was thrilled anyway!
I did not realise owls were such a danger to cats.
Thank you for visiting me..I hope you are breathing easier today, too!

How exciting! We hear owls at night, but rarely spot them, and never during daylight. What a treat! :)

That's incredible! We have an owl that flies between the houses here but I can never get a photo of him. I love to hear him at night about dusk though! Great photos, my friend!
